Waitomo is the North Island glowworm stop, about two hours south of Auckland by road, and the caves here have been run as a visitor site for over a century. Two practical things apply across the site: the Waitomo visitor complex is completely cashless, and around Christmas and New Year the tours sell out completely — the one genuinely good reason to book online ahead. For the boat tour, your booking voucher is exchanged for a ticket at the visitor centre counter before the tour starts.

The longer, quieter Waitomo cave tour — and the one where you can take photos. Ruakuri is entered through a dramatic man-made spiral drum that corkscrews down into the hillside, then follows walkways past glowworms, limestone formations and an underground river for a full 1.5 hours.

Ruakuri is also the accessible choice: the walking route is wheelchair and stroller friendly, which the main Glowworm Cave is not. Two practical points: the cave entrance is about 10 minutes by car from the Waitomo Visitor Centre and there is no shuttle, so you need your own transport — and arrive on time, because latecomers forfeit their ticket without a refund.

About this tour

A small-group trip into a privately owned cave system on a family farm in the Waitomo district, away from the crowds and the developed show caves. After about 15 minutes of preparation and a safety briefing, you walk 10 to 15 minutes through native bush and the Mangapū Gorge to the entrance, then spend around two hours underground: walking, wading through shallow water, climbing over rocks and crouching through smaller sections, with larger chambers and glowworm displays along the way. There are no paved paths or handrails, no boat and no abseiling.

The group is limited to eight people, and caving clothing and boots are provided; afterwards there are showers, tea, coffee and biscuits. Phones and small cameras are welcome, and the guide takes photos of the group that are sent to you afterwards. This is the operator's regular group tour — not to be confused with the same operator's private photography tour. You arrive under your own steam: no transport is offered.

Waitomo earns its fame — reviewers praise the guides above all — but the critical reviews are worth reading before you book rather than after:

  • The boat tour is short, and the boat section is a small part of it. The tour runs 45 minutes in total, groups move on a schedule, and the drift under the grotto itself goes quickly. The recurring wish in otherwise glowing reviews is more time on the water among the glowworms.
  • Some visitors feel it is expensive for the length. Value for money is the weakest part of the boat tour’s ratings, and the price comes up in critical and positive reviews alike. If time underground matters most to you, Ruakuri doubles it.
  • Ruakuri is a formations cave first, a glowworm cave second. Several reviewers arrived expecting the dense glowworm ceilings from the marketing photos and found fewer, scattered lights instead. Book Ruakuri for the spiral entrance, the limestone and the photography — the big glowworm display is the boat tour’s job.
  • Ruakuri punishes lateness. The cave entrance is about 10 minutes by car from the Visitor Centre, there is no shuttle, and arriving late forfeits the ticket without a refund. Build in a buffer.

Can I take photos in the Waitomo caves?

Not on the boat tour — cameras and GoPros are not permitted anywhere inside, though souvenir photos can be bought. The Ruakuri walking tour next door is the exception: photography is allowed throughout. The Off the Beaten Track tour in a private cave also welcomes phones and small cameras, and the guide takes photos of the group. Expect it to be difficult either way; the caves are dark and glowworm light is faint.

Do the Waitomo tours sell out?

At peak times, yes. Around Christmas and New Year the tours sell out completely, and summer school holidays are busy. Booking online ahead of your visit secures a slot and lets you pick a quieter time. In winter, availability is rarely a problem.

Is Waitomo wheelchair accessible?

The Ruakuri walking tour is — its man-made spiral entrance and walkway route take wheelchairs and strollers, which is unusual for a wild cave. The main Glowworm Caves boat tour is not wheelchair accessible.
